There close to 400,000 women who undergo breast augmentation procedures annually and most of them get saline or silicone implants inserted in order to increase their breast cup sizes. Others still undergo breast lift procedures in order to return their youthful look which could be undertaken in concert with tummy tuck procedures in what may be called a mommy makeover after finishing childbirth and issues related with breastfeeding.
Common complications
The main aim of breast augmentation procedures is usually to improve a person’s appearance and in the process boost their self confidence but there can be several complications after breast augmentations that need to be considered. The following are among the most common breast surgery complications:

Breast surgery complications
Hardening of breast tissue
When breast augmentation surgery is done the doctor will insert a breast implant which is at best a foreign object inside your breast. What your body does instinctively is to grow a scar tissue capsule around the foreign object and in a few cases this capsule will contract and harden. This condition is known as capsular contracture and may cause your breast to look funny and at times very hard and painful as well.
Risk of infection
Just as is normal with every surgical procedure there is always the risk of infection even in situations where the surgeon has adhered to all the safety measures that are available. The good news is that many infections can actually be treated with antibiotics even though there are a few rare cases where a second procedure to drain excess fluids may need to be conducted. On some rare occasions the surgeon has had to remove implants so as to allow the healing process before they are finally returned again. More often some women decide to go for a second surgery in order to get their dream bust line in place.
Leakages
The breast implants that are inserted are normally silicone shells that are full of silicone gel or a specialized saline solution. The implant shells are usually made to endure over a course of time but there are rare occasions when they get ruptured especially in periods such as when you are engaged in active sports, car crashes, slip and fall accidents, or sometimes for any unexplained reasons.
When the shell ruptures this could lead to a leak; saline implants are more prone to leakages and the saline solution is normally absorbed by the body leaving that particular breast looking deflated. Silicone raptures though rare, could also happen and the gel migrates to other body tissues. Saline leakages are completely harmless to the body but it is not exactly known how silicone leakages could harm the body. Any rupture and leakage will mean there is a need for another surgery to replace the implant which will be another cost.
